The Sant’Ambrogio Basilica

It was built in 386 by the bishop Ambrogio to lay Gervasio’s and Protasio’s
bodies, who had been killed in the name of Christian faith. The Basilica rose
outside the walls of the old Roman town, on a Christian churchyard. After
Ambrogio’s death, in 397, the church was called "Basilica of St. Ambrogio"
because his body was laid inside it.
Little ruins of the floor and some carved arches near the choir are the only
remaining things of the old building. The actual structure is due to several
interventions: the choir and the apse date back to the VIII century; the front,
the side apse and the lobby date back to the IX century; the Roman struc-tures
of the basilica and the lobby to the XI century and to the XII century
the tiburio over the presbytery.
The side chapels have been added to the structure afterwards.
